How to Record Provenance for AI-Assisted Work

A polished artifact can look authoritative even when nobody can explain its origin. The missing information is relational: which sources shaped it, what activity changed it, and who made the consequential choice. Record provenance as a compact chain around the artifact. Keep enough detail to reconstruct the basis of the result without preserving private conversation. Capture four relationships

For important work, identify:

the selected source material;
the activity that produced the artifact;
any finding that caused a revision;
the accountable decision that chose the current version.

These relationships differ from a general source library. A library says what material exists. Provenance says what this artifact used and how it became this version.

Prefer explicit relationships over narrative memory

W3C PROV-O defines a vocabulary for entities, activities, agents, generation, and derivation. CommonMark provides a portable way to express a small relationship table in plain text. The NIST AI Risk Management Framework places documentation within broader governance and risk-management work.

You do not need a complex graph for every note. A short table with artifact, used, changed because, and chosen by can carry the essential explanation.

Match detail to consequence

This provenance method fits artifacts that support recurring, shared, public, or consequential work. It is excessive for a temporary brainstorm with no downstream use.

Do not record secrets merely to make the history exhaustive. The record should explain the work while respecting the boundary around private material.

Trace one claim through correction

The synthetic provenance note connects the unsupported Saturday sentence to the source finding and corrected brief.
